The International Paper Triennial.

The Triennial is open to all artists who work with paper. In other words, artists who use paper to create works of art by transforming the material itself rather than using it solely as a support or vehicle, and for whom paper occupies a prominent place in their larger oeuvre.

Over the competition’s 25-year history, the Musée de Charmey has had the privilege of hosting and exhibiting close to 400 artists from 35 countries. The 10th International Paper Triennial will be held from 26 April to 4 October 2020.

Program Period

From 26 April to 4 October 2020.

The prize-giving ceremony will be held on Saturday 25 April 2020.
The audience prize will be announced and presented to the winner at the exhibition’s closing ceremony on Sunday 4 October 2020.

Eligibility Requirements (Criteria)

  • Artists may submit up to three works for consideration by the jury.
  • Three-dimensional works must be less than one cubic metre.
  • Two-dimensional works must be less than one square metre.
  • The maximum height and/or width must not exceed two metres.
  • There is no lower limit.
  • A series of works, such as a diptych or triptych, may be considered as a single work provided that their dimensions conform to the specifications stipulated above.
  • All submitted works must be recent, i.e. they date from 2017 to 2019.
  • The works selected to go forward to the 10th International Paper Triennial must reach the Musée de Charmey no later than 6 April 2020.
  • The dispatch of the works to the Musée de Charmey and their return will be at the artist’s expense (transport and insurance costs).
  • A registration pack must be submitted to the Museum via the Museum’s website, or by post or by email before 15 November 2019. No documents will be returned to the artists unless explicitly requested.

The International Paper Triennial has three prizes, as well as an award voted for by the public:

  • First prize 4,000 Swiss francs.
  • Second prize 2,000 Swiss francs.
  • Third prize 1,000 Swiss francs.
  • Audience prize 500 Swiss francs.

Note:The dispatch of the works to the Musée de Charmey and their return will be at the artist’s expense (transport and insurance costs). The artists may, at their convenience, bring and collect their works, or have them sent and retrieved by a third party.

How to Apply

First Step: Fill the application form on the official website.

Second Step: By submitting the registration pack, the applicant accepts the rules stated herein. To register, the artist must complete and submit the duly completed online or paper registration form, and provide the following documentation for each work in French, German or English (maximum three A4 pages):

  • Cover page, including number/code given on the registration form (the name of the artist must not appear on any registration document).
  • High-definition photographs of the work.
  • Title of the work.
  • Size of the work in centimetres (metric system only).
  • Date when the work was created.
  • Description of the techniques and material used.
  • Thematic outline of the work (maximum 10 lines).

Third Step: A registration pack must be submitted to the Museum via the Museum’s website, or by post or by email:
