Young Champions of the Earth Competition

Young Champions of the Earth is a forward-looking prize that celebrates young people who have a big idea to protect or restore the environment, a vision for a more sustainable future and a strong track record of instigating change.

More Details

In 2020, seven young people between the ages of 18 and 30– selected from every global region – will be named Young Champions of the Earth and will receive seed funding, intensive training and tailored mentoring to bring their big environmental ideas to life.

The 2020 Young Champions of the Earth will also be required to share their journeys through videos and blogs on the website for up to one year.

Eligibility Requirements (Criteria)

  • applicants must be between the ages of 18 and 30 on 31 December 2020.
  • applicants must have at least six months of prior experience working on their environmental project.
  • life experience and past achievements that prove applicants’ abilities as an environmentalist change-maker
  • applicant should have a referee’s recommendation that can vouch for the viability of your idea and for you as an individual.
    Note:  A referee must fall into at least one of the following categories:
    1. senior staff person at a registered and reputable environmental or youth-focused organization
    2. university professor
    3. senior staff person at a business that has received third party recognition for its sustainability efforts (e.g. through prizes, media coverage, affiliation with initiatives like the UN Global Compact, or membership of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development).

Each winner will receive:

  • US$15,000 in seed funding
  • US$9,000 to communicate and capture your idea and document and broadcast the stories of hope and change that you’re catalyzing on the ground
  • Attendance at a high-level UN meeting
  • An introduction to dignitaries at the Champions of the Earth award ceremony
  • Publicity and recognition through interviews and online and global media
  • Access to a community of experts offering insights and mentoring
  • Participation in an entrepreneurial training program

How to Apply

First Step: Sign Up on the application portal of the website from here.

Second Step: Fill your personal information along with a biography (up to 100 words) , the title and summary of your idea (up to 150 words). You will also be required to answer questions regarding your project:

  • your idea’s impact socially and environmentally.
  • how you intend to make use of the seed funding, you will also be asked to state if you have had funding in the past.
  • what you have done in the past 6 months of your project.
  • if you have received any prize or expression of support.
  • how your past achievements demonstrate your ability to think outside the box.
  • how you will use the platform given to you if you receive the prize.

Third Step: provide your referee’s information (name, position, organization, etc.) and upload their letter of recommendation.
