Allen Senior Music Scholarship – St Catherine’s College Oxford

Allen Senior Music Scholarship offers one Graduate Scholarship worth £3,263 per annum, tenable for up to three years. For students who in October 2019 will be reading for an Oxford University graduate degree (MSt, MPhil or DPhil) in Music.

  • The Scholarship is tenable for up to three years.

Eligibility Requirements (Criteria)

  • Proven and potential academic excellence.
  • Evidence of proficiency in English at the standard level required by the University (IELTS Academic minimum 7, TOEFL iBT minimum 100).
  • Availability of supervision, teaching, facilities and places.
  • Students are selected for admission without regard to gender, marital or civil partnership status, disability, race, nationality, ethnic origin, religion or belief, sexual orientation, age or social background.
  • All recommendations to admit a student involve the judgment of at least two members of academic staff with relevant experience and expertise, and additionally must be approved by the Director of Graduate Studies or Admissions Committee (or equivalent departmental persons or bodies).
  • Whether you have yet secured funding is not taken into consideration in the decision to make an initial offer of a place, but please note that the initial offer of a place will not be confirmed until you have completed a Financial Declaration.

How to Apply

First Step: Submit an application for study for the (MSt, MPhil or DPhil) in Music before 1 March 2019, pay the application fee and Upload the following documents:

  1. Official transcript(s)
  2. CV/résumé
  3. References/letters of recommendation (three overall, generally academic)
  4. Written work (two essays of 2,000 words each)
  5. Portfolio (two or three compositions with a combined duration of 30 minutes) “for DPhil in music and MSt or MPhil in performance and composition”
  6. Statement of purpose/personal statement (up to two pages) “for MSt or MPhil in performance, composition and musicology”
  7. Research proposal (Up to 2,000 words) “for DPhil in Music only”

Second Step: Send the scholarship application by email to

  • In a single PDF file if possible.
  • It should be single-spaced.
  • In at least a 12 point font.

Third Step: The scholarship application must include, in the following order:

  1. A completed Graduate Scholarship Application Cover Form including the names and addresses of two referees.
  2. A personal statement (one page maximum).
  3. A research outline accessible to non-specialists (up to 1,200 words). For taught courses applicants may provide a statement of their academic interests and motivation for undertaking their course in place of a research outline.
  4. A full curriculum vitae (two pages maximum).
