Description

5th SMACH BIENNALE

“SMACH – Constellation of art, culture & history in the Dolomites” is a land art project born in 2012. An outdoor biennial exhibition that supports the marriage of art and nature. Every edition features 10 artistic creations assembled in the heart of the Dolomites which are specifically created and adapted to different natural sites. The works’ aim is to spark the interest of visitors for art and highlight the area in which they have been assembled by creating a constant dialogue between art and nature. International applications are accepted. Every edition has a new theme, and the chosen artists set up their installation across various locations in Val Badia with the aim of promoting a deep and continuous awareness of the historical, cultural, natural, and traditional aspects of the area.
The fifth edition of SMACH puts the the word ‘FRAGILE’ as it’s main focus. What do frailty and fragility mean in our world? After all, being fragile can mean a lot. Headlines say the current pandemic has shone a light on the fragility of institutions and globalisation; while according to the Oxford dictionary, “delicate”, “dainty” and “fine” are synonyms of fragile. The world and peace are fragile – but so are human relations at times.

  • Other requirements
  • Submissions
  • Individual and group submissions are accepted.
  • Works selection
  • The 10 works, one for each of the 10 locations, will be selected based on their interpretation of this year’s theme (Fragile) as well as the goals of the SMACH project.
  • Number of submissions
  • Each individual or group submission can submit 2 works. The submissions have to state their chosen location, and the jury will assess the opportunities presented by the choice of location and the work submitted.
  • respect environment
  • All SMACH locations have to be treated with the utmost respect. These areas feature a delicate biological, environmental, and agricultural balance. The use of natural material from the area to create the work is favoured. Artistic installations harmful to the environment will not be considered. The chosen projects will feature all the characteristics and conditions necessary for their installation and exhibiton in outdoor conditions throughout all summer, and will be chosen based on the materials used as well as the safety they provide for visitors or animals which happen to stumble upon them. The artists/group of artists can be excluded from the competition if, during the work’s installation, the Organisation were to find the submitted work causes severe environmental damage to the area or is not safe for visitors and animals alike.
  • Work adaptation
  • The artists/group of artists have complete freedom of how the work is developed as well as what type and size it is. Works whose size respect the location they are installed in will be chosen: it is important the submission is adapted to the “scale of the landscape” and not to that of just any regular exhibition area. The Organisation will be available for advice and information but will not actively help nor pay for the installation ofthe work.
  • Feasibility
  • The development of the submitted project and its feasibility are essential: the work selected will have to highlight its feasibility in line with the call’s conditions (e.g. the work will have to be resistant to the wind and typical mountain weather, its materials have to be durable over a long period of time, think of the possibility/impossibility of anchoring the structures, etc.)
  • Work installation
  • The artists/group of artists will be responsible for sourcing their own material, transport and installation of their work in the chosen location within the agreed timeline. The installation of the works of art will occur between 31 May and 4 June 2021 (weather permitting). The positioning and installation of the work will be documented by taking pictures and video footage.

  • Prize
  • The selected artists/group of artists (10 in total) will each receive a prize money of €2,000 (net after taxes).
  • Accommodation

Costs

  • Participation/Program fees
