European Master in Animal Breeding and Genetics (EMABG)

Are you interested in animal breeding? Do you have a passion for genetics? Do you enjoy working in a truly international environment? Then you are the right candidate for the European Master in Animal Breeding and Genetics (EMABG)! The EMABG MSc course is open for motivated students with a background in Animal Sciences, biology or related fields, who would like to specialise in the field of Animal Breeding and Genetics. EMABG welcomes applicants of any nationality, economic or social background who meet the admission requirements.

More Details

The EMABG is a joint master programme that fulfils a real need for the industry sector and for society as a whole. It is designed to answer the scientific, practical, and societal challenges of animal breeding and genetics. These challenges can be summarised for both developed and low-income countries as follows:

  • meeting the greater demand for animal and fish products, while preserving or improving the quality of products, the welfare of animals, and minimising the environmental impact
  • preserving natural resources, with special attention to biodiversity
  • making efficient use of novel tools and technologies to reach these goals while maintaining societal acceptance of animal breeding
  • developing sustainable animal breeding programmes that contribute to an improved livelihood of farmers and efficient food chains
  • developing sustainable breeding programmes that contribute to the improved health and welfare of animals, including populations in zoos and nature reserves

Eligibility Requirements (Criteria)

  • Academic Bachelor of Science Degree (minimum 180 ECTS) in animal science. An equivalent degree from related fields, such as agricultural sciences, veterinary medicine, zoology, botany, microbiology or similar is also accepted, if basics of genetics or animal breeding knowledge is documented in the transcript of records.
  • Language Proficiency: A good knowledge of English is a prerequisite for an application.
  • Students are required to pass a TOEFL or IELTS exam meeting the following minimum requirements:

>TOEFL IBT: at least 92

>ACADEMIC IELTS: at least 7.0 (minimum of 6.0 in the sub-score “speaking”)

>TOEFL and IELTS test should have been taken no longer than two years before the application deadline.

Opportunity Cost

  • A limited number of highly competitive EMJMD scholarships, provided by the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency of the European Union are available that cover participation, living and travel costs.

How to Apply

First Step: Students interested in applying for the EMABG must submit the documents listed below via the EMABG application database. Only documents submitted via the application database and only complete applications will be considered.

Documents must be submitted in .pdf format.

The Required Documents: 

  1. DIPLOMA/CERTIFICATE OF DEGREE: BSc or BSc and MSc (if applicable) certificate.
  2. TRANSCRIPT OF RECORDS: BSc or BSc and MSc (if applicable) transcript of records.
  3. LANGUAGE CERTIFICATE: Copy of an official language certificate (TOEFL or IELTS) attesting language skills in English, as described in section on admission requirements
  4. COPY OF PASSPORT
  5. CURRICULUM VITAE: in Europass format
  6. 2 LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION: from two different persons (previous professors or employers)
  7. DECLARATION OF CONSENT: Can be downloaded via the application database. It must be printed, signed and re-uploaded to the database.
  8. CERTIFICATE OF CURRENT RESIDENCE: The certificate of residence must be in English language or merged with an English translation and can be:

1- A residence certificate issued in accordance with the candidate’s municipality normal registration rules

2- A certificate from the applicant’s place of work, study or training issued by the employer or institution in question. This certificate has to be dated and signed.

**Both documents must have been issued within 12 months before the submission deadline of applying for an EMJMD student scholarship.
