Continental Essay Competition

competition has a role of Standardisation in resolving and addressing the socio-economic issues for the Refugees, Returnees and Internally Displaced Persons and creating durable Solutions to Forced Displacement in Africa.The Competition aims to have 3 categories of winners: the National, Regional and Continental.

Continental winners will be announced during the African standards day celebration held yearly during the ARSO general assembly in (Kampala -Uganda June 2020)

Eligibility Requirements (Criteria)

  • Applicant’s criteria

1- applicants must be citizens in Africa and have age below 35 years old.

2-Applicants can use English language or French language for writing the essay.

  • Essay criteria

essay shouldn’t:

  • have been accepted or shown for other competitions.
  • have been published in any form.
  • focus on the work of particular person, organization or brand name.

essay should :

  • has general understanding of standards within the context of refugees, returnees,and IDPs i.e. security, health, livelihoods, housing and infrastructure, education, environment, weak government structure, and asylum policies.
  • has a clear example in the society on how standards have been used to create durable solutions to forced displacement as per the specific issues affecting refugees, returnees, and IDPs within Africa or in your Africa.
  •  be between 1000:1200 words an double spaced and presented in century Gothic, size 12.

Opportunity Cost


  • There are no application fees for the competition application.
  • The prizes of the competition separate into two parts:

1-regional level

  • first position USD 500.
  • second position USD 300.
  • Third position USD 200.

2- continental level

  • first position USD 1000.
  • second position USD 800.
  • Third position USD 500.

How to Apply

First Step: 

Applicant must provide postal, physical, telephone, and e-mail addresses on the first page of the essay with the title of the essay and information of the author.

Second Step:

you must attach a copy of the identity card or passport and a completely filled registration form from here.

Third Step:

send your items for the national standard body of your country which must be a member in ISO. (each country has special NSB)
