LSE-SAWIRIS Scholarship Program

Sawiris Foundation offers two (2) scholarships for Urban Leaders working in Public Sector or Third Sector in Egypt to obtain their executive MSc in Cities at the London School of Economics.

The LSE Executive MSc in Cities is an 18 months program designed for qualified professionals to “study” while working” and gain insights into how cities can be better managed, governed, planned, and designed whilst learning to understand and deliver these vital changes. The program consists of five one-week residential sessions in London, spread over the academic year including more than 150 hours of face-to-face contact time with the faculty of LSE academics and visiting global fellows.

The program brings together experts from across LSE and its wider global network to train the urban leaders of tomorrow.
The program builds upon the Centre’s extensive interdisciplinary urban research program, social science research methods and wide range of public and private sector advisory activities. It also harnesses LSE Cities’ substantial networks of global city policymakers and practitioners established through its Urban Age program over the last decade.
The program consists of five (5) short-term sessions as well as six (6) months Individual Consultancy.

  • Cities and Society: Design and Social Cohesion
  • Cities and the Economy: Urban Economic Development and Finance
  • Cities and the Environment: Urban Environmental Transition.
  • Urban Consultation Project

The elective courses of the program are:

  • Urban Infrastructure and Strategic Planning
  • Urban Development and Master Planning

Program Timeline:

  • Call for Applications (Submission of the program application and Sawiris scholarship application): December 20th, 2019 until February 28th, 2020.
  • Candidate referees submit their letter to LSE: March, 3rd, 2020.
  • Online Interviews with shortlisted candidates: March, 2020.
  • Announcing the program awardees and signing the contracts: April, 2020.
  • Beginning of the study program: September 2020.
  • End of the program: December 2022.

Eligibility Requirements (Criteria)

  • The LSE-Sawiris Scholarships are open to Executive MSc in Cities applicants who live in Egypt and work in either the public or third (non-profit) sectors.
  • Applicants must also meet the eligibility criteria for the Executive MSc in Cities by at least 10 years of work experience in an urban-related field, as well as having attained an undergraduate degree with an overall result equivalent to a 2.1 (overall result of 80% or higher from an Egyptian university).

Entry Requirements: 

  • At least 10 years of professional experience in urban related public/private/third sector roles. They will also consider applicants with a similar level of experience who wish to move into the urban sector.
  • If English is not your first language then you will need to demonstrate that you meet LSE’s ‘higher’ English proficiency requirement. It is not necessary to provide proof of this at application stage, but it may be made a condition of your offer.
  • Two references: two professional references, OR one professional reference and one academic reference.
  •  Personal statement: include your interest and suitability for the program, career achievements, and ambitions, what you hope to get out of the program and what you believe you can bring to the class.
  • CV or résumé
  • Commitment to work in Egypt for two consecutive years after completing the program.

Opportunity Cost

(Fully Funded)

  • Successful awardees of the LSE-Sawiris Scholarships will receive full tuition fee support.
  • The Sawiris Foundation will also provide transport to and from Cairo, as well as accommodation and living costs in London during teaching modules.

In order to be considered for a scholarship, applicants will need to complete BOTH of the steps below by 12.00 (noon) on Friday 28 February 2020.

First Step: Programme Application (Click Here to Apply For the Program)

  1.  Create New Account.
  2. You will be automatically redirected to the portal.
  3. Fill in all the sections of the application form then submit.

You will need the following to complete an application:

  • University transcript and degree certificate: You will need to provide a degree transcript and certificate for each degree you list on the application form.
  • CV or résumé: This should outline your professional experience to date in chronological order. Please ensure that it includes at least 10 years of professional experience.
  • Names and contact details for two referees: At least one of your referees should know you in a professional capacity. LSE will email reference requests to your referees directly, so please provide work email addresses where possible.
  • Personal statement: This should provide a brief overview of your background and outline your reasons for joining the programme. Please keep it to two pages or less.
  • The Executive MSc in Cities does not have a GRE/GMAT requirement.

Second Step: Scholarship Application (Click Here to Apply For the Scholarship)

  1. Submit a scholarship application using the LSE-Sawiris online Scholarship Application Form.
  2. The form will ask you for proof that you are currently resident in Egypt. By completing the form you will also agree that you intend to continue living in Egypt for at least two consecutive years following the conclusion of the programme in February 2022. You will also be asked to provide a Skype Name that the programme team can use if you are shortlisted for interview.
  3. The form must be completed in a single session, so applicants are advised to review the form, compile the relevant information and then complete it in full.
