Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship (Vanier CGS) program helps Canadian institutions attract highly qualified doctoral students from across the country and abroad. The Vanier CGS program considers three equally weighted selection criteria: Academic Excellence, Research Potential, and Leadership.

A candidate is invited to apply for the Vanier in one of two ways:

  • An interested student may approach the Graduate Chair for Vanier consideration, or vice versa.
  • After reviewing the annual collection of Scholarsheets, the Associate Dean (Graduate) and the Faculty Vanier working group invites a competitive student, or a competitive applicant for admission, to apply.

Opportunity Focus Areas:

  • Health research
  • Natural sciences and / or engineering research
  • Social sciences and humanities research

English or French.

Program Period

Three years.

  • August 31, 2019: Application submission deadline in ResearchNet.
  • April: Results released by the Secretariat to universities.

Eligibility Requirements (Criteria)

  • Academic Eligibility:  At Western, an eligible applicant must have achieved a minimum of 80%, or equivalent, in each of the last two completed years of full-time study, or equivalent to full-time study. Eligibility averages for competitive scholarship are rounded ONLY to the nearest decimal place. The eligibility averages are based on grades on the transcript(s) up to August 31st of the year of application.
  • Doctoral awards are tenable only in degree programs that have a significant research component. The research component must be a requirement for completion of the program and is considered to be significant original, autonomous research that leads to the completion of a dissertation, major scholarly publication, performance, recital and/or exhibit that is merit reviewed at the institutional level. Clinically-oriented programs of study, including clinical psychology, are also eligible programs if they have a significant research component, as described above.

$50,000 Per year for three years during doctoral studies.

How to Apply

First Step: Applications are initiated in one of two ways. Either:

  1. The student informs the faculty of graduate studies at the selected institution of their intent to apply to the Vanier CGS program.
  2. The institution initiates the nomination process by contacting the desired candidate.

Second Step: In ResearchNet, the candidate must complete all tasks listed for the Vanier CGS application:

Third Step: Applications are prepared by the student and submitted to the nominating institution by their internal deadline (set in ResearchNet by the nominating institution) using the ResearchNet application system.
