EPFL School of Engineering International Summer Fellowship Program

The EPFL Excellence in Engineering Program offers an intensive research training opportunity to students interested in research careers in any field of engineering, science and technology.

More Details

– You will be matched with a laboratory based on your interest and background.

– You will be working as a member of the research group for a period of 8 to 12 weeks during the summer months. An extension to a full semester can be discussed on a case by case basis.

– You will attend a series of group meetings and workshops given by researchers from EPFL and abroad.A dedicated workshop with combined social activity will be devoted to the participants presenting their own summer research results.

Eligibility Requirements (Criteria)

Eligibility: You must be enrolled in a Bachelor or Master program. Students enrolled in PhD programs are not eligible. At the time of application, you should have successfully completed at least your second Bachelor year in any field of engineering, science and technology.

Selection Criteria: Fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis taking into consideration the following criteria:

  • You are among the top 10% of your class with a high GPA.
  • You plan to pursue PhD studies. Previous laboratory experience is a plus.
  • Your application package should convince the selection committee of your excellence and passion for science. Your statement of purpose reflects your ambition, career goals, and explains your choice of host laboratories.

Opportunity Cost

(Fully Funded)

  • Accepted students will receive a monthly living allowance of 1600 CHF to cover their housing and living expenses.
  • Travel costs will be refunded on request and depending on the host lab.
  • You will be in charge of finding your accommodation. Yet, when offered a fellowship, the administrative personnel will almost invariably suggest a list of places where to look for it (student forums, billboards, student residences, etc.).

First Step: Apply on the program website.

Second Step: You will receive a mail with a link to Upload the following documents:

1. A CV

2. Transcripts 

  • Transcripts can be in any form your university provides them and should cover the whole of your academic career (Bachelor and Master so far).
  • If you only have them in paper copy, please scan them.
  • If they are not in English, please send both the originals and a translation (no need for the translation to be official, you can do it yourself).

3. Statement of Purpose (max. 1000 words)

Third Step: When you apply on the web:

  • Specify the cumulative GPA at the time of application exactly in the format provided by your school on your transcripts, without attempting to rescale it to 0-100 or 0-4 or adapt it to any specific system.
  • Select up to three research domains you would like to do research in.
  • Select up to three preferred research laboratories you would like to work with.Take the necessary time to identify the right laboratories in order to increase your chances of acceptance.


  • The only accepted format is PDF.
  • EPFL consider recommendation letters for this program, but it is not mandatory. It does not provide a seperate platform to send recommendation letters and they simply have to be uploaded as an additional attachment.
  • You will have a student status for this summer period and you will have to apply for a Schengen student visa through your embassy.
  • If you are accepted in the program, EPFL will start the visa procedure and send you an invitation letter informing you about the steps to follow to obtain the visa.
