Tom Howat PhD Studentship in Mathematics

The Tom Howat PhD Studentship in Mathematics will support an outstanding candidate undertaking PhD research in the field of Mathematics. The studentship is funded by a generous donation made by Dr Tom Howat in 2018.

Trinity College offers a range of competitive graduate funds (often referred to as studentships or bursaries) to students wishing to study at the University of Cambridge. Only applicants who have applied to the University of Cambridge for admission as graduate students are eligible to apply for these awards. Without confirmation that the applicant has applied to the University for admission, the studentship/bursary application will not be considered.

Eligibility Requirements (Criteria)

  • Eligible applicants must have applied for admission, or already received an offer of admission, to the University of Cambridge for a PhD in Mathematics.
  • Home, EU or Overseas graduates of any University may apply.
  • An award will be conditional on the applicant being accepted by the University’s Graduate Admissions Office. The successful applicant must become a member of Trinity College on taking up the Studentship.

  1. Graduate Course Fees.
  2. maintenance allowance set at the rate approved by the College Council for Internal Graduate Studentships
  3. Research Scholarship Emolument.
  4. return ticket from the country of origin to the United Kingdom for overseas students.

How to Apply

First Step: Registration: you will be asked to enter your email address and to create a password.
Second Step:Enter your personal details, academic details & application details.
Third Step: References:

  • You must provide the names and contact details, including email addresses, for two referees acquainted with your academic work and whom you have asked to send assessments of your academic standing.
  • Referees will be required to upload references (in pdf format) to our secure online application system.
  • Please make it clear to your referees what is needed and encourage them to submit their references as soon as possible.

Fourth step: Supporting Documents: You will need to upload requested supporting documents including

  • a copy of your University Application Form,
  •  A copy of full official statements and/or transcripts of your degrees, diplomas and other qualifications.
  • Provide an outline of your proposed subject of research at the University of Cambridge, mentioning the Faculty concerned and prospective supervisor(s), if known.
  • The outline should be maximum of 1,500 words or two sides of A4 paper.

  • Completed application forms and all supporting documents must be submitted through the online application system by 12:00 noon (GMT) on 10 January 2020.
