ETH Zurich Postdoctoral Fellowships
The ETH Zurich Postdoctoral Fellowship program is intended to foster young incoming postdoctoral researchers who have already demonstrated scientific excellence in the early stages of their careers.

- Approximately 28 ETH Fellows can be appointed each year. About 14 fellows can be selected in each round. About twice as many candidates are invited for the interview. The success rate was 25-30% in the last rounds.
- The criteria of the candidate’s aptitude are based on the CV, the reference letters and the
career outline and include research performance, track record relative to opportunities and career stage,
competence for the proposed work, and compatibility of the ETH Fellowship with the career goals of the
applicant. The research itself is evaluated based on the scientific quality of the proposal, the suitability of
the proposed procedures, expected difficulties, and chances of success, and the significance and
innovativeness of the project.

Two years
- The fellowship duration cannot be prolonged.

- At the time of the submission deadline, applicants must hold a doctorate (Ph.D.) or will complete their doctorate within the next six months.
- Although there is no age limit, applicants with the doctorate (Ph.D.) must have obtained it a maximum of two years before the submission deadline. The decisive date is the date of the examination or viva vice.
- Researchers may not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Switzerland for more than twelve months or at either ETH Zurich, a research institute of the ETH domain, or the University of Zurich for more than six months in the three years immediately before the submission deadline.
- The applicant needs to have at least one scientific publication in a peer-review journal or has been awarded a prize for his/her doctoral thesis.
- Applications have to be made jointly by the candidate and the potential host, who must be an ETH Zurich professor and willing to act as the mentor of the fellow.
- There must be convincing synergies between the host (group) and the ETH Fellow.
- Applications not complying with the eligibility criteria will be rejected on formal grounds.
Notes:
- Applicants who have not yet completed their doctorate must submit a certification of the planned date of their defense signed by the advisor or department chair. The examination or viva voce must have been completed by the time the fellowship is started.
- Applicants who earned their Ph.D. from ETH Zurich or the University of Zurich will not be considered.
- priority will be given to applicants who propose their projects. Thus, it is important that applicants come up with their ideas and draft the application themselves and that the applicant and mentor have not closely collaborated before the fellowship.

- As of 2020, an ETH Fellowship covers up to 232,900 CHF. This is composed of the gross salary of the
fellow (88,600 kCHF in the first year, 93,050 CHF in the second), social security contributions. - 12,000 CHF per year for research expenses and travel.
Note: The budget allocated for travel and research costs may not be used to cover salary costs and vice versa.

First Step:
Prepare the following documents:
- Application Cover Sheet. Please sign and send the sheet as a PDF file to the specified address and do not upload it.
- Detailed project description restricted to five pages excluding the literature list, including the summary and the research plan.
- Information on ethical issues and research requiring authorization or notification.
- Complete CV of the candidate including a list of publications and a picture. It is important that all dates at
least include month and year. - Short CV of 2 pages of the host professor.
- A brief outline of the career goals of the candidate.
- A letter by the host professor, stating why the candidate is considered excellent and why they are invited to the host group.
- If applicable, certification of the planned date of the defense signed by the advisor or department chair.
Notes:
- Other costs: The explanations of the research costs do not have to be very detailed. Broader
categories with short explanations (e.g. consumables, travel, conference fees, etc.) should be
used. - Teaching duties are individual and depend on the agreement with the prospective host.

Second Step:
Apply jointly with your prospective ETH host professor using the dedicated online system. Use the detailed submission instructions to know more about the submission steps.
Third Step:
The reference letters must be sent electronically directly to the Grants Office, to the following address:
[email protected] at least 10 days before the relevant submission deadline (Subject of the e-mail: last name candidate_first name candidate_last name reference). Only two reference letters will be accepted. Additional reference letters will not be considered.
Notes:
- Within two months after the deadline, the candidates will be informed whether they are invited to an interview. selected candidates are invited to interviews that would be held online via video call due to current travel restrictions and will last about 15 minutes. The final funding decisions are communicated about four months after the submission deadline.
- The host professor needs to apply if the fellow is not yet employed at ETH Zurich.
- The candidates have to identify and contact the preferred host professor on their own.
- Only two reference letters will be accepted. Additional reference letters will not be considered.
