The Sony World Photography Student Competition

The Student competition rewards and showcases the work of the world’s most talented photography students.

The world we live in is structured around a variety of invisible lines. This could be in a natural environment (ie oceans, mountains, forests), in our society (ie gender, wealth, race), or intellectually. Show the judges the stories of people fighting against that and trying to break the invisible lines that most intrigues you in a positive way.

Program Period

  • The selected images will be announced after being deemed suitable by the World Photography Organisation after February 1, 2020.
  • The ten (10) winning universities will be notified by email and will receive return flights to London (economy class) and hotel accommodation for 2 nights in April 2020.

Eligibility Requirements (Criteria)

  • The Competition is open to all students of photography from World Photography Organisation’s selected Universities.
  • The competition is for all students studying an element of photography within a higher education course.
  • All Entrants must be aged between 18 and 30 years of age at the time of Competition’s deadline.
  • Your institution should be teaching higher education photography – a minimum of one module/course in photography as part of a degree course or similar. Students entering the competition should be studying an element/module of photography.
  • Students are required to submit three (3) – five (5) images responding to a brief. To enter, institutions must be registered and you must give your images to your tutor to submit them to compeition.
  • Free to enter for anyone undertaking a full-time photography program.
  • Entries must be original and your own work.
  • Images must be taken between June 1, 2019 and November 29, 2019.
  • All Entrants must be able to supply a high-resolution image suitable for printing in media.
  • Criteria for the university representative:1) Academic institutions must teach a programme* of photography.2) Institutions must promote the competition to students using materials provided by the World Photography Organisation.
  • Images may be digitally manipulated. You must provide details on how your image has been altered.
  • Entries which infringe upon the copyrights, trademarks, contract rights, or any other intellectual property rights of any third person or entity, or which violate any person’s rights of privacy or publicity. This means, for example, that entries must not include:

– Trademarks owned by third parties.

– Copyrighted materials owned by third parties (including movie dialogue or musical compositions.)

– Names, likenesses, voices or other characteristics identifying celebrities or other public figures, living or dead.

– Entries in which an Entrant has purchased or secured the rights to use stock images.

– Entries which contain any commercial content that promotes any product or service other than that of World Photography Organisation. Entries must not contain screen credits.

Opportunity Cost

(Prize)

  • Student Photographer of the Year receives €30,000 worth of Sony digital imaging equipment for his or her institution and inclusion in the Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition at Somerset House, London.
  • 10 shortlisted photographers receive lights and accommodation to the Awards ceremony in London, a range of Sony digital imaging equipment, publication in Sony World Photography Awards book and inclusion in the Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition at Somerset House, London.
  • The ten (10) winning universities (one student and one tutor from each university) to be chosen from participating universities will be notified by email and will receive return flights to London (economy class) and hotel accommodation for 2 nights in April 2020.
