This scholarship supports students toward study for an honours or master’s degree in the Economics or Political Science at the University, It was established in 1994 by a gift from Alan Gibbs.

Program Period

1 – 2 years.

Eligibility Requirements (Criteria)

  • The scholarship is tenable for one year, by students enrolled in a program for a master’s or an honours degree in Economics or Political Science at the University with a course weighting in the range 0.75–1.50 EFTS Such a program must include a research component of at least 30 points.
  • The scholarship is tenable in either part one or part two of a two-year master’s degree program, It is also tenable for 180-point, one-year master’s degrees offered by the Department of Political Science or the Department of Economics and Finance.
  • Applicants must have met the academic requirements for enrollment in their intended program of study , by 10 December in the year of application for the scholarship.
  • Every recipient not already enrolled in the appropriate program of study (described in clause 1) should normally be enrolled in that program by 31 March in the year following application A recipient who is unable to enroll by the applicable deadline must seek permission from the Dean of Arts to take up the scholarship at a later date, Without this permission the award will be terminated.
  • The scholarship must be taken up in the year following the year of application.

Opportunity Cost

(Partially Funded)

  • One scholarship, providing financial assistance to an amount specified (The current value of the scholarship is $16,500), is available annually, in any year, the Council of the University may elect to offer two scholarships, each with a value of fifty per cent of the value of the full scholarship: one to a candidate who will be studying Economics, and one to a candidate who will be studying Political Science), If funds permit, the Council may elect to offer each of the two scholarships at the full value).

  • Attach the necessary documents(the undergraduate qualification certificates, a CV and personal statement).
  • Submit the application.

Third Step: Applications must be made on the appropriate form and must be received by the Scholarships Office not later than 5pm on 15 October, or, if this is not a business day, not later than 5pm on the next business day.
