The University of Amsterdam offers a prestigious new scholarship program for exceptionally talented Master’s students from outside Europe.The Faculty of Science aims to attract talented students to it’s international classrooms .It offers several scholarship programs designed to offer (both Dutch and international) motivated students the opportunity to pursue a science degree at the university of Amsterdam.

The Amsterdam Excellence Scholarship (AES) is made possible by the Amsterdam University fund with the help of alumni of the university of Amsterdam.

Eligible Countries

ALL WORLD COUNTRIES EXCEPT EUROPEAN UNION COUNTRIES AND SWITZERLAND.

Program Period

One academic year with the possibility of extension for a second year (for two-year Master’s program).

Eligibility Requirements (Criteria)

  • Not have the nationality of one of the countries of the European Union /European Economic Area or from Switzerland.
  • Not be eligible for support under the Dutch system of study grants and loans.
  • Not receive a full coverage scholarship for the same period of study as the Amsterdam Excellence Scholarship.
  • Have submitted a complete application to one of the Master program.
  • Have been (or will be) admitted for the first time to one of the Master program at the University of Amsterdam.
  • Be able to comply with the conditions to obtain a Dutch visa.
  • Have completed their previous academic program no longer than 3 years ago.

Selection Criteria :

Eligible candidates are selected on the basis of their academic excellence and promise in the proposed field as evidenced by:

  • The academic quality of the educational institute where the undergraduate degree has been obtained.
  • The quality of the letter of motivation.
  • The candidate’s curriculum vitae.
  • The quality of the application as a whole (completeness, accuracy, consistency).
  • Proof of English proficiency.

Failure to meet one or more of the requirements, automatically means that the student is not eligible for this scholarship.

Opportunity Cost

(Partially Funded)

  • €25,000, Covering tuition fees and living expenses for one academic year.

How to Apply

First Step: 

The candidate should check the specific entry requirements for the program of choice and make sure to provide the following documents:

  • Letter of motivation (maximum 500 words) in which the candidate explains the reasons for choosing the specific Master’s program and the relevance of obtaining this scholarship for the candidate’s future academic career.
  • Curriculum vitae, including a description of extracurricular activities.
  • Academic records (Students belonging to the top 10% of graduates from their class can apply till GPA 3.5/4).
  • A proof of English Proficiency.

Third Step:

  • Application for the Amsterdam Excellence Scholarship is part of the application procedure. On your application form you should mention whether you want to be considered for a University of Amsterdam scholarship. Please check this box if you want to be considered and if you fulfill all requirements.
  • Furthermore, enclose a paragraph in your motivation letter for the Master Program in which you explain why you wish to be nominated for the Amsterdam Excellence Scholarship and what it would mean for your future academic career.
