Eligibility Requirements (Criteria)

For Course-Based Master’s:

  • The scholarship will be awarded to students both domestic and international students.
  • Students being newly admitted to the University of Alberta in the Fall  2019 or Winter 2020 Term.
  • Students who will be registered full-time in a course-based master’s degree program with a clearly defined research component.
  • Applicants with Admission GPA of 3.7 and higher.
  • Students who have not been registered in the master’s program they are recruited into.

For Thesis-Based Master’s: 

  • Newly admitted students into a thesis-based Master’s program in the Spring 2019, Summer 2019, Fall 2019, or Winter 2020 Term.
  • Students who will be registered full-time in a thesis-based Master’s degree program.
  • Applicants with Admission GPA of 3.7 and higher.
  • Students who have not been registered in the Master’s program they are recruited into.

University Minimum Entry Requirements: 

  • Applicants are normally required to have completed a four-year baccalaureate degree, or its academic equivalent, from an academic institution recognized by the University of Alberta.
  • An admission grade point average of 3 on most 4-point grading systems or B on most letter grading systems, based on your most recent two years of full time study (or equivalent) is required.

  • Applicants need to demonstrate English Language Proficiency by:
    1. Possession of a degree or its academic equivalent from an institution recognized by the University of Alberta and where the language of instruction is English. Proof that the instruction for the degree was in English will be required, or
    2. A satisfactory score on one of the following approved English language examinations: TOEFL Minimum score of 550 (paper-based), or a total score of 88 with a score of at least 20 on each of the individual skill areas (internet-based), IELTS Minimum overall band score of 6.5, with at least 5.5 on each band (Academic), PTE Academic Overall minimum score of 59.

  • Recipients of this scholarship will be offered Guaranteed Housing by Residence Services.
  • For Course-Based Master’s:

Offered for one year at a value of $17,000 plus payment of tuition and fees up to the maximum cost for registration in the equivalent of 9 normal credit weights (equivalent to 18 fee index units) in courses for the first Fall Term and Winter Term of the Master’s program only.

  • For Thesis-Based Master’s: 

The award is valued at $17,000 for 12 months, plus full-time program and non-instructional fees, and any applicable International Graduate Differential Fee. This scholarship is not renewable.

How to Apply

First Step: University Application

Ensure that you have at least an hour to complete the online application.

The application requires digital copies (PDF – view instructions) of official documents. The documents are considered “unofficial” and will be used for the initial evaluation of the application.

Supporting documents may include the following:

  • Application Requirements for Academic Documents (transcripts, degree certificates, marksheets).
  • English Language Proficiency scores such as IELTS, Pearson, TOEFL, etc. (if applicable)
  • Additional requirements might include
    • CV, statement of intent, writing samples
    • GRE, GMAT,other test scores
    • References: Will require the name of referees, title and email addresses. An email with a secure link will only be sent to your referees after you submit and pay for your application. Reference letters need to be in PDF and must be on your referees institution’s or company’s official letterhead or it will not be accepted.
  • It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that references and all required documents are received by the application deadline or the application will not be considered for admission.

A $100 CAD non-refundable applications fee is required. The application fee is waived for those whose citizenship, mailing address and their home address is from one of the following countries.

Second Step: Scholarship Application

There is no application form; eligible students are considered on the recommendation of the admitting department. Students cannot apply for this scholarship. The department completes and submits the nomination package to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research (FGSR) by the nomination deadline. The FGSR reviews the nominations for eligibility and completeness and forwards them to the Graduate Scholarship Committee for adjudication.
