With Its Merit scholarship program, University Hamburg supports outstanding international students and doctoral students of all subjects and degree levels.

Program Period

 1 year.

Eligibility Requirements (Criteria)

  • persons who do not hold German citizenship.
  • persons not entitled to funding as part of the federal student loan scheme.
  • persons demonstrating good to excellent academic performance.
  • persons prepared to get actively involved in the internationalization of University Hamburg.
  • persons residing in Hamburg during the funding period.
  • persons in financial need.

Opportunity Cost

(Fully Funded)

The maximum monthly funding sum is €650. Depending on the availability of funding, individual doctoral students may be awarded a merit scholarship totaling €1,000.

First Step: You have to make an account first from here.

Second Step: Apply for online application from here, please upload them in the online tool:

  • tabular CV.
  • proof of social and/or political activities in an international context.
  • PIASTA project proposal (see FAQs).
  • course certificate (STiNE printout or transcript of academic performance).
    If you are a master’s student in your first semesters or a doctoral student, please submit the final certificate from your previous degree.
  • Two evaluations from full-time professors at Universität Hamburg who offer courses and conduct independent research in their field. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept evaluations from acting professors, Privatdozenten, or retired professors.  Please note that you are only able to submit your application once you have received confirmation from two professors that they are willing to provide evaluations in support of your application. Please use this evaluation form and pass it on to your two chosen professors.
  • Please use this form to list your completed coursework if this is not recorded in STINE.

Third Step: Once you have submitted your online application, present your residence permit to the merit scholarship program coordinator (Ms. Daniela Pérez y Effinger) in person during office hours.
