Computational Biology and Bioinformatics (CBB) at Duke University is an integrative, multi-disciplinary Ph.D. program that trains future leaders at the interdisciplinary intersection of quantitative and biomedical sciences.

The Duke CBB program is one of the first Ph.D. programs dedicated to computational biology in the country. Ph.D. students in the CBB program receive a broad foundation in quantitative theory and methods, focused training in a specific biological domain, and immersion in a diverse range of research approaches.

Eligibility Requirements (Criteria)

  • Applicants must hold either a US bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from a regionally accredited institution. If the degree was granted by an institution outside of the US, the institution must be accredited by the governing educational body of the country (such as the ministry of education).
  • They encourage applications from students with strong undergraduate backgrounds in multiple of biology, statistics, mathematics, physics, and computer science.
    • They look for students who have excelled in science coursework as undergraduates and/or who have performed at a high level in independent study, research, or work.
  • Prerequisites: Students are expected to have taken the following courses prior to entering the CBB program:
    • Mathematics through at least differential equations and linear algebra
    • A course in probability and at least one other course in statistics
    • Courses in programming, data structures, and algorithms
    • A course in genetics
    • A course in cell and molecular biology
    • A course in biochemistry or organic chemistry

    Otherwise competitive students lacking one or more of these requirements will be expected to satisfy these prerequisites prior to or during their first year.

  • All CBB students are guaranteed at least five years of funding that includes tuition, fees and a generous stipend. The uniform stipend for academic year 2019 – 2020 is $31,800. The CBB Graduate Program provides support for students admitted directly into the program for the first 2 years of doctoral study. Beginning July 1 of the third year in residence, the faculty advisor will become responsible for the student’s stipend and fees for the duration of the student’s dissertation work.
