7th Bergen-Belsen International Summer School – “Brave New World?Commemorating the Holocaust in the Digital Age”

The Bergen-Belsen International Summer School is aimed at international students from different disciplines interested in the challenges of commemorative culture in a global, digital and medial context. The summer school offers lectures, guided tours, workshops, and discussions held in English. Its aim is to develop visions for the future of educational work at museums and memorials.

The Bergen-Belsen International Summer School wants to give participants a deeper insight into the work of Bergen-Belsen as an international place of remembrance and learning while also exposing the students to the perspectives and projects of international speakers and scholars.

This year’s Summer School will take place exclusively online. We will focus mainly on the future of Holocaust remembrance in the digital age.  We will look at different digital tools and strategies and at the chances and possibilities new media offer to institutions and individuals working on the topic of the Holocaust and other mass atrocities.

Program Period

From 2 to 7 August 2020.

Eligibility Requirements (Criteria)

  • The program aim to gather young academics in their masteror PhD studies and/or young professionals at the beginning of their careers with an affinity for HolocaustGenocide-and Memory Studies and (political) education.
  • The program encourage applications from people working in the creative industry.
  • The working language of the Bergen-Belsen International Summer School is English.The participants’ language skills must be sufficient to enable them to understand the preparatory texts, follow the lectures and tours and actively participate in the discussions.
  • Participants must be 18 or older.

Opportunity Cost

  • The programme is free of charge
  • We will be using an online messaging platform, a project management tool and a video conference tool (tba). Participation requires internet accessibility and a workspace with suitable hardware (at least Windows 7/Mac OS X 10.10
  • We will provide all participants with a certificate of attendance.
