“Women of Egypt” announces the launch of its First Writing Contest for Egyptian children all over the world between the ages of 3 and 16. The contest is made possible with the generous support of Diwan Bookstore and Al Dar Al Masriah Al Lubnaniah Publishing House; Art Partner One Shot for Photography and Advertising; and Media Partners Friends of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina at Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia, Arabic Literature in English Blog “ArabLit”, and Cairo Mockingbird Platform for Arab Art and Literature.

The contest starts on 15 January 2019 and closes on 15 February 2019(12 pmCairo Time). “The goal of the contest is to discover and celebrate Egyptian children’s creative writing, in English or Arabic, and to get them excited about reading and writing by encouraging them– no matter what their background, education or lack thereof,” said Dina Al Mahdy, the contest coordinator.

The contest starts on 15 January 2019 and closes on 15 February 2019 (12 pm Cairo Time). 

Eligibility Requirements (Criteria)

  • There are NO fees to enter the contest.
  • The contest is open to Egyptian children all over the world between the ages of 3 and 16
  • Only single author stories qualify (no co-authored stories).
  • Entrants will write an original story in English or Arabic on any subject or theme (fact or fiction).
  • All entries must be submitted by an adult capable of giving permission on behalf of the child – either a parent or a guardian.

Word Count Range:

  • The age group 3 – 5 years must have minimum 5 words and maximum 100 words.
  • The age group 6 – 11 years must have minimum 100 words and maximum 600 words.
  • The age group 12 – 16 years must have minimum 600 words and maximum 1500 words.
  • Text must be typed and sent as a word document by email.
  • Children who cannot write yet may dictate their story to be typed and sent using the Entry Form as a Word document by email.
  • Children can include drawings and photos in a separate JPEG or PDF file. Drawings and photos are optional and will not be evaluated as part of the contest.
  • Word count includes “a,” “an,” & “the”.
  • Invented spelling is accepted.
  • Entries will be judged on the following criteria:
  1. Originality
  2. Plot
  3. Characterization
  4. Language

* * Not adhering to the contest rules will automatically disqualify the submission. 

Opportunity Cost


  • Winners will be notified by phones or emails.
  • In each language, there will be nine winners, three for each age group.
  • Winners will be announced in June 2019. Winning entries will be published in e-books in July 2019.

How to Apply

First Step: 

  1. send the story using the Entry Form as a Word document to the following email:
  2. Parents/guardians should include a scanned copy or a photo of their Egyptian national ID or passport, for proof of contestant’s citizenship. Children born to Egyptian parents anywhere in the world qualify to participa­te.
  3. Submissions are sent by email under the subject “Children Writing Contest Submissions”.
