Meiji Jingu Japanese Studies Research Scholarships from SOAS University of London.

The SAOS University of London offers a partially funded scholarship for any full-time MPhil/PhD program where the student will be working on some aspect of Japanese Studies.

SOAS University of London (the School of Oriental and African Studies) is a public research university in London, England. Founded in 1916, SOAS is located in the heart of Bloomsbury in central London. it is the leading Higher Education institution in Europe specializing in the study of Asia, Africa and the Near and Middle East. SOAS has produced several heads of states, government ministers, diplomats, central bankers, Supreme Court judges, a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and many other notable leaders around the world.

Program Period

1 year.

Scholarships are for one year only, but it is possible to reapply if an award recipient has demonstrated outstanding potential for research.

Eligibility Requirements (Criteria)

  • The program should full-time MPhil/PhD where the student will be working on some aspect of Japanese Studies. Part-time programs are not eligible.
  • Current PhD students at SOAS, or newly enrolling full-time MPhil students with an offer of admission are eligible.  Newly enrolling MPhil students may be given preference.
  • It is important that your referees comment on your skill in Japanese in the areas of reading, composition and speaking.
  • Applicant must possess an MA degree from SOAS or an equivalent institution in a relevant subject.
  • Candidates must have an offer of admission by the scholarship deadline.
  • Applicants must meet the English language condition of their offer of admission to study at SOAS as soon as possible but no later than 1 June 2020. If your offer is conditional on English, please arrange your English test and ensure you meet the English requirements as soon as possible.

  • The scholarship offers £7000 in total.

Please note that postgraduates tuition fees in SOAS are ranging from £20.000 to £25.000 per year for the full-time student.
