Job description

  • You will work on the development and application of hybrid quantum/classical dynamical simulations to study light-induced processes (excited-state dynamics) in biomolecules and novel materials.
  • You carry out your research according to the approved research proposal (>75% of the time), will follow a training programme in accordance with the requirements of the Groningen Graduate School of Science and Engineering (10 15%), and will be involved in teaching and/or the supervision of students (10%).
  •  The GGSE training includes writing an introductory essay, following courses, workshops and/or summer schools, and actively participating in conferences (including at least one oral presentation).
  •  At the start of the employment, your promotor and you will decide in consultation about your teaching activities.
  • Training as well as teaching responsibilities are laid down in a personal training and supervision plan.
  • You are expected to complete a doctoral dissertation within 4 years.

Note: You will get a temporary position of one year with the option of renewal for another three years. Prolongation of the contract is contingent on sufficient progress in the first year to indicate that you will successfully complete your PhD thesis within the next three years.

Eligibility Requirements (Criteria)

You should have:

  • A master degree in Physics or Chemistry.
  • Strong background in chemistry and fundamental physics.
  • Experience in electronic structure theory, computational quantum/classical dynamics, and good knowledge of programming tools are desirable.
  • Affinity with teaching; individuals with actual teaching experience will be favoured.
  • An excellent command of English.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills (indicated by the ability to work in a team, write scientific papers and deliver presentations).

Opportunity Cost

The University of Groningen offers you in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities:
• a salary of € 2,325 gross per month in the first year, up to a maximum of € 2,972 gross per month for a full-time working week in the fourth and final year.
• a full-time position (1.0 FTE).
• a holiday allowance of 8% gross annual income.
• an 8.3% end-of-the-year allowance.
