PhD in Engineering: Optimisation for novel structural-material configuration.
The PhD is placed in an active research group located both at Cardiff University and the University of California, San Diego and will require travelling between the two institutions. However, the degree awarding institution and primary base will be Cardiff University. Working collaboratively and cooperating with the research group and external collaborators will be essential to the success of the project.

The primary approach of interest is topology optimisation using the level set method to produce new and unintuitive design. The method is applicable at materials and structural scale, the coupling of scales and/or multiple physics (such as structural and electromagnetics) for multifunctional structures. Materials may be composites, metal or smart. This project is primarily numerical and computational in nature, with an interest in finite element and/or PDE systems. A keen enthusiasm to learn engineering optimisation based on multivariable calculus is required. The primary tasks will be conducted by programming in C/C++.
Opportunity Focus Areas:
- Engineering.
- Novel Structural.
- Material Configuration.
