The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) is an independent Australian federal government agency responsible for scientific research. Its chief role is to improve the economic and social performance of industry for the benefit of the community. The CSIRO-UQ collaboration on Responsible Innovation was established in December 2017 to build and raise the profile, scale and credibility of social science expertise in the ethical, social and legal consequences of new and disruptive science and technologies in the Australian innovation system.

Program Period

Eligibility Requirements (Criteria)

  • Australian citizens, Australian Permanent Residents and NZ citizens, or International student.
  • Students with a strong interest in applied social science.
  • Not already hold a PhD.
  • not already be receiving a Commonwealth funded tuition fee scholarship.
  • English Proficiency:- IELTS overall 6.5; reading 6; writing 6; speaking 6; listening 6. For other English Language Proficiency Tests and Scores approved for UQ, view the English proficiency policy.
  • Visa requirements:- International students who are accepted into full-time study in the Doctor of Biotechnology are eligible to apply for an Australian student visa.
  • Student will relinquish the Scholarship if their PhD project changes such that it is outside the scope of that project description.
  •  The student will be required to participate in various cohort activities associated with the CSIRO-UQ Responsible Innovation PhD cohort.

Opportunity Cost

(Partially Funded)

  • $32,096 per annum, 2019 rate, indexed annually + $16,000 over the course of your PhD to complete the project attached to this scholarship.
