Program Period

Three years.

Studentships are for three years and all candidates will be expected to register for 1 October 2019.

Eligibility Requirements (Criteria)

  • Applications are invited from outstanding scholars working in any area of human and physical geography, communications and media, social and policy studies and politics and international studies. We are especially keen to recruit excellent researchers with interests in climate science and hydroclimatic extremes, migration and mobility, urban development and economy; digital media, social theory and cultural consumption, Black British culture, culture and social inequality, interpersonal communication; poverty – child poverty and inequality; bioethics and biomedicine; Cold war decolonisation, militarism, war and gender.
  • You must contact the School before submission to discuss your proposal. As a research student, you will be provided with research skills training and support from internationally recognised academics.
  • Entry requirements are listed using standard UK undergraduate degree classifications i.e. first-class honours, upper second-class honours and lower second-class honours. To learn the equivalent for your country, please choose it from the dropdown at the end of this webpage.
  • Applicants should have or expect to achieve, at least a 2:1 honours degree (or equivalent international qualification) in the major subject of their research field or a related subject. A relevant master’s degree will be an advantage.
  • English Language Requirements:
    • The standard University IELTS English language requirements is 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each individual element (reading, writing, listening and speaking). Some departments may require higher levels English language. You can know more from this website.
    • For those students who do not meet our IELTS requirement, Loughborough University offers a number of pre-sessional English language programmes.

Opportunity Cost

(Partially Funded)

  • The studentship provides a tax-free stipend of £14,777 per annum plus tuition fees at the UK/EU rate. International (non-EU/UK) students may apply however the total value of the studentship will be used towards the cost of the International tuition fee in the first instance.
