The scholarship is tenable for study towards a PhD degree in the Faculty of Science at the University of Canterbury and will be offered to the first-ranked candidate on the Faculty of Science list of candidates for a University of Canterbury Doctoral Scholarship, except that if the first ranked candidate is offered the Brownlie Scholarship the Roper Scholarship will be offered to the second ranked candidate on the Science list.

Eligibility Requirements (Criteria)

  • The scholarship is tenable for study towards a PhD degree in the College of Science at the University of Canterbury and will be offered to the first-ranked candidate on the College of Science list of candidates for a University of Canterbury Doctoral Scholarship, except that if the first ranked candidate is offered the Brownlie Scholarship the Roper Scholarship will be offered to the second ranked candidate on the Science list.
  • An application for a University of Canterbury Doctoral Scholarship, with placement on the College of Science list, constitutes an application for the Roper Scholarship in Science; a separate application is not necessary.
  • Apart from the differences specified here, the regulations for the Roper Scholarship in Science are the same as for the University of Canterbury Doctoral Scholarship, except that the offer of the Roper Scholarship in Science is made only once a year, in December.
  • College of Science students who apply successfully in May of the same year for a University of Canterbury Doctoral Scholarship will be automatically considered for the Roper Scholarship in Science, in competition with candidates applying in October. If such a candidate accepts an offer of the Roper Scholarship in Science, the University of Canterbury Doctoral Scholarship will terminate and the tenure of the former scholarship will be backdated to the earlier scholarship commencement date with commensurate adjustment of the emolument.
  • Tenure of the Roper Scholarship in Science will normally be for the period necessary for a student to complete up to 3.00 EFTS2 of enrolment from the date on which the candidate takes up the scholarship, or from the backdated start date if Clause 5 applies. In the case of a student already enrolled for a PhD degree at the University, the term of the stipend will be reduced by any period in excess of 0.50 EFTS that the recipient has already completed for the degree at the time that either the Roper or a University of Canterbury Doctoral Scholarship is conferred.
