The Diamond Challenge

The Diamond Challenge is offered as a philanthropic education initiative by Horn Entrepreneurship at the University of Delaware. As such, it provides free, open-access resources for students, educators and practitioners of entrepreneurship. Participation in the Diamond Challenges involves learning from the pursuit of new ideas. It also involves the creation, submission and presentation of original content in the form of business and social concepts.

Competition Pitching:

  • Virtual
    If there is not a pitch event near you, or the competition track you selected is not available in your state/country, you can submit an idea and compete virtually. Based on submission round scores, eligible teams will be invited to submit a pitch video during the second round of the competition.
  • Live
    If there is a pitch event near you, and the competition track you selected is available in your state/country, based on submission round scores, eligible teams will be invited to pitch live in front of judges.

Competition Tracks:

  • Business Innovation
    If the primary purpose is to solve a customer problem that by doing so will generate revenue and profit, then the business innovation competition is right for you.The business innovation competition focuses on the development and validation of new business models.
  • Social Innovation
    If the primary purpose is to solve a social problem and make a positive impact on people or the environment, then the social innovation competition is right for you.The social innovation competition focuses on the development of new, social innovation models that may include revenue-generating nonprofit organizations and mission-driven, for-profit ventures.

Program Period

  • Submissions Open: August 31, 2018.
  • Submissions Close: December 17, 2018.
  • Virtual Judging: January 11, 2019.
  • Pitching Round: February 1, 2019 – March 10, 2019.
  • Diamond Challenge Summit: April 13, 2019 – April 15, 2019.

Eligibility Requirements (Criteria)

  • If you want to participate, you must be a high school student in 9-12 grade/form.
  • Teams must be comprised of 2-­4 high school students typically between 14-18 years of age at the time of the submission deadline, and must be enrolled in an official high school/secondary education institution for the duration of the Diamond Challenge.
  • Teams require one teacher or adult advisor (18 years of age or older) who is in a position to provide the opportunity to participate and broadly available to offer support to the team.
  • Any given student may participate on just one team (and therefore submit just one concept) per competition cycle/year.
  • Teams may be comprised of students from more than one school.
  • Team members have the authority to submit/present their original work by virtue of their ownership of the content.

Opportunity Cost

(Prize/ Partially Funded)

  • Semifinalists receive an invitation to travel to the University of Delaware to compete in the semifinal round. Top prizes include additional funding that may be used to support the team’s idea or serve as a scholarship to attend any school in the world.
  • Semifinalists are awarded an in-kind $5000 package that includes tickets to the Summit, hotel accommodations for up to three nights, meals during the conference, and access to speakers, mentors and innovators.
  • The Diamond Challenge is not responsible for covering any costs associated with traveling to or from the Summit. Semifinalists must identify the necessary funding to and from the Summit in order to attend.

Top Prize Awards:

  • 1st Place: A prize package worth over $16,000, including the in-kind $5,000 semifinalist package.
  • 2nd Place: A prize package worth over $12,000, including the in-kind $5,000 semifinalist package.
  • 3rd Place: A prize package worth over $8,500, including the in-kind $5,000 semifinalist package.

Fourth Step: Select if you will compete virtually or at a live pitch event.

Fifth Step: Select if you will compete in the Business Innovation or Social Innovation track.

Sixth Step: Complete your entry form that includes information about you and for your team members.

Seventh Step: Submit your idea in English by Monday December 17, 2018 at 11:59 p.m. EST.
