These scholarships are funded by the Commonwealth Government to provide assistance for living costs to students during completion of a PhD. Scholarships are offered for projects which are aligned with recently awarded Category 1 project grants or DECRAs. Work with leading researchers, and learn to conduct research independently and think critically, while contributing to large projects of national significance. See ‘About the award’ for a link to the list of projects currently available.

More Details

Commencement: Enrolment in the PhD program is in research quarters (not semesters), and commencement in a research quarter is fixed to a specific period. Recipients of these scholarships may commence in any research quarter.

Program Period

3 – 4 years (full time).

Eligibility Requirements (Criteria)

  • A domestic part-time student with carer’s responsibilities, a medical condition or a disability, which prevents them from studying full time may be eligible for scholarship consideration, on a case by case basis.
  • International students must study full time.
  • Students can be considered for scholarship only twice. Consideration can be prior to enrolment, or in the first round after the confirmation, milestone is achieved*.

  • Base stipend of $27,596 per annum (2019 rate), indexed annually, tuition fees, Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)

First Step: Browse the available projects. Email the Chief Investigator if you have any questions about the project, your suitability for the project, or the preferred educational background. If you are having difficulty contacting the Chief Investigator for a project, the School or Institute’s Postgraduate Admin Officer will be able to assist. Once you have decided on the project that is the best fit for you, continue to Step 2.

Second Step:  Prepare your application documentation.
