New Media Writing Prize (NMWP)

The Competition is organized by Bournemouth University Higher Education Corporation (“BU”) through The Faculty of Media and Communication.

The New Media Writing Prize (NMWP) showcases exciting and inventive stories that integrate a variety of formats, platforms, and digital media. This international prize is now in its 9th year. The prize encourages and promotes the best in new media writing and is leading the way toward the future of the ‘written’ word and storytelling.

Eligibility Requirements (Criteria)

The objective of this Competition is to reward the best new media work based on the following criteria:

  • Innovative use of new media to create an engaging, satisfying narrative or poem
  • Ease of accessibility for the reader/viewer
  • Effective use of interactive elements
  • An example of how new media can do things that traditional media cannot do
  • The potential to reach out to a wide audience, i.e. not just special interest
    groups.

Note:

  • The Competition is free and open to any person whatever his/her age or nationality.
  • BU assumes that where an entrant is under 18, the entrant’s parents have consented to his/her entry in the Competition and his/her agreement to be bound by the Rules.
  • All entries in all categories must be in English.

Opportunity Cost

a. Unicorn Student Award: £750

b. If:book UK New Media Writing Prize: £1000 donated by if:book UK, where the winner may also be a student

d. The Dot Award: £500 and development support, offered by if:book UK, where the winner may also be a student

e. Skylab Innovation Award, sponsored by Skylab and Bournemouth University – £500. A new award to celebrate 10 years of the New Media Writing Prize and Genarrator. The prize celebrates innovative use of the Genarrator platform (Genarrator-made entries only please!), where the winner may also be a student.

Note that:

  • Each emailed entry should contain an active URL for the judges to access your work. However, if your entry is for viewing on a mobile phone, wearable, or other electronic devices, please provide clear instructions on how to view your piece. NB Make sure you include the word MAIN, STUDENT, DOT, or JOURNALISM in the subject line of the email, so we know which award/s you wish to be considered for. Students can submit to all of the categories; shortlisted journalistic pieces are also considered for the Main prize.

Each entry should contain the following information within the text of the entry email:

  • Title of the work.
  • Entrant’s contact details: name, email address, telephone number and postal address. For joint entries, all entrants’ contact details must be provided with an identification of the main entrant for contact purposes.
  • Entrant’s short autobiography (50-100 words). For joint entries, all entrants must provide their autobiographies.
  • Entrants who wish to submit a work for the Student Prize must provide a proof of identity which should be displayed in the body of the entry email, e.g. a scanned copy of entrant’s Student Union ID card or university enrollment number, which will be authenticated at the organizer’s discretion.
