UNESCO King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa Prize for the Use of Information and Communication Technologies in Education.

The UNESCO King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa Prize for the use of ICT in education is now accepting candidatures. The theme of the 2019 edition is the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to innovate education, teaching and learning. The Prize will award AI-powered solutions as well as applications of neuroscience in AI aiming to improve learning outcomes, to empower teachers and to enhance the delivery of education services, while advocating for inclusive and equitable use of these technologies in education.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and advancements in neuroscience have the potential to enhance teaching methodologies, support lifelong learning and personalize learning through various ways, as well as propel and accelerate the discovery of new delivering modes of education. Keeping in with Sustainable Development Goal 4 on education, UNESCO with its partners is aiming to explore the effective and ethical use of AI applications to reduce barriers to access education and optimize learning processes with a view to improve learning outcomes.

The deadline for applying is 31 October 2019.

Eligibility Requirements (Criteria)

Individuals, institutions, non-governmental organizations or other entities that use AI-powered solutions to provide quality and inclusive education, learning and teaching.The projects should be ongoing for at least 6 months and meet the following criteria:

  • Relevance to the Thematic Focus: The project is in line with the objectives of the Prize and is relevant to the specific theme of the year.
  • Innovation: The project applies AI-enhanced solutions or blends AI and conventional technologies in a new innovative way.
  • Impact: The project ensures from the very beginning that it will have a lasting impact beyond the project life cycle and generates measurable positive and sustainable impact in the lives of the targeted beneficiaries.
  • Potential for Replicability and Scalability: The project should show evidence that it can be replicated in other contexts or have the potential to further optimize and scale its impact.

Opportunity Cost


  • Two winners will be selected, each winner will receive a reward of US$ 25,000 and a diploma during a ceremony in Paris.
