just IMAGINE if… is an annual international social enterprise and innovation competition supporting ideas that tackle our global challenges with over £100,000 worth of university research and business support. just IMAGINE if…everyone had healthy food to eat every day.

just IMAGINE if…there was a safe home for everyone to sleep in every night.

just IMAGINE if…everyone had the opportunity to receive as much education as they wanted.

just IMAGINE if… is an international innovation competition, open to anyone across the globe who has a business idea which tackles at least one of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The 17 goals include clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, and gender equality.

More Details

The competition entries (remember to submit both a video AND a written document!) will be judged by a panel of judges based on the following criteria:

  • Demonstrating a clear vision of how the business idea will work and its viability.
  • A clear explanation as to the sustainability and scalability of the business idea.
  • Definition of which of the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals the idea aims to tackle and how.
  • The impact that winning the research prize will make on your ability to develop your business idea.

-10 finalists will be selected and assigned a counsellor(s) to help them prepare for the final pitch, along with support from One Young World. The final will consist of a pitch competition where each finalist (or 1 member of each finalist) will be invited to give a presentation in person lasting approximately 10 minutes, pitching their idea before a live invited audience at the just IMAGINE if… event on 30th March 2020.

-The top 3 finalists of just IMAGINE if… 2020 will be selected by a vote of the audience attending the event, following completion of all finalist pitches.

-The ultimate winner will then be chosen by a judging panel. The winning applicant will be announced at the gala dinner on the evening of 30th March 2020.

Eligibility Requirements (Criteria)

  • All applicants must be at least 18 years of age at the date of entry.
  • All applicants must be able to access the internet and have a valid email account for the duration of the competition.
  • If selected as a finalist, the applicant must be able to present their idea in person at the just IMAGIINE if… event on 30th March 2020, at Durham University, Durham, UK.
  • Applicants can be individuals, groups, companies, partnerships or not-for-profit organisations.
  • There is no limit to a group size, but any pitching at the just IMAGINE if… event is limited to 1 person. Where an applicant is a company, partnership or not-for-profit organisation, the term “applicant” as used in these terms and conditions shall extend to their directors, shareholders, members, partners and employees.
  • Applicants will be expected to cover their own travel costs to the just IMAGINE if…event on 30th March 2020.
  • Applicant’s ideas should not have received development funding totalling greater than £100,000.
  • Applicants must not be: employees of Durham University or its subsidiary companies who are professionally connected with the competition or its administration; employees of agents or suppliers of Durham University or its subsidiary companies, who are professionally connected with the competition or its administration; or members of the immediate families or households of the employees referred to above.

Opportunity Cost


  • The main prize for just IMAGINE if…2020 is a package of research and Business School support from Durham University valued at £70,000.
