The Caterpillar Poetry Prize 2019- The Caterpillar Magazine

The winning poem will be published in the summer 2019 issue of the Caterpillar and the winner will receive a cash prize of €1000. Previous winning poems were published in The Irish Times.

The Caterpillar is a magazine of poems, stories and art, created by grown-ups for children. It is the younger sibling of the Moth, an art and literature magazine for grown-ups. The caterpillar is for kids between the ages of 7 and 11, though grown-ups are boud to like it too. It appears four times a year- in March, June, September and December.  Jhon Hagley chose the Caterpillar as one of his top ten children’s poetry books in The Guardian. The Caterpillar includes some great writing by the the likes of Michael Morpurgo, Meshack Asare, Julie O’Callaghan, Dennis Lee.

Application deadline is 31 March.

All entrants to the competition will be notified by email by 30 April 2019, including those who have not been successful. The winner will be announced in June, to coincide with the publication of the summer issue of The Caterpillar.

Eligibility Requirements (Criteria)

  • The prize is for a single unpublished poem written by an adult for children (aged 7–11).
  • The poem can be on any subject, and there’s no line limit.
  • The poet should be 16 years or over.
  • Entries must be entirely the work of the entrant and must never have been published, self-published, published online or broadcast.
  • Entries must be in English.
  • You can enter as as many poems as you like.
  • Worldwide copyright of each entry remains with the author, but The Caterpillar will have the unrestricted right to publish the
     winning poem in the summer 2019 issue and any relevant promotional material.

Opportunity Cost

  • The winner will receive a cash prize of  €1000. The entry fee is €12 per poem.
  • The winning poem will be published in the summer 2019 issue of The Caterpillar.
