LAGI 2020 Fly Ranch

The Land Art Generator Initiative and Burning Man Project have partnered to launch a multi-disciplinary design challenge—LAGI 2020 Fly Ranch—that will create the foundational infrastructure of Fly Ranch.

You are invited to propose your regenerative artwork in this stunning landscape. In 2021 selected design teams will be provided an honoraria grant for the purpose of building a functional prototype on site.

Eligibility Requirements (Criteria)

  • Your entry must not have been used in any other context, and it must not have been previously published or exhibited anywhere in the world.
  • The design must be kept confidential and anonymous until the results of the challenge are announced.
  • Anyone is eligible to enter the LAGI 2020 Fly Ranch design challenge.

  • SELECTION CRITERIA Adherence to the Design Brief;

    – The integration of the work into the surrounding environment and landscape;

    – The sensitivity of the work to the environment, and to local, and regional ecosystems;

    – The utility of the support system(s) for Fly Ranch provided by the work (energy, water, shelter, food, and/or zero-waste). Please note, you do not need to tackle all five systems with your design;

    – The way in which the work addresses visitors to Fly Ranch;

    – The embodied energy required to construct the work;

    – And the originality and social relevance of the concept.

  • Up to $150,000

$150,000 in award stipends (honoraria) will be provided to approximately 10 selected projects for the purpose of building a functional prototype on site. The amount of each honorarium will be established on a project-by-project basis. For more information, please see the Terms & Conditions.

How to Apply

First Step: Register your team by creating an account from here

Second Step: Log in to your account from here and click “Upload Your Submission

Third Step: Upload the following documents.

  1. Exactly three A1 size layout boards (PDF only).
  2. One (1) DOC or DOCX file containing a 1,500-word maximum written narrative that tells the story of your artwork and includes the information listed below:
    • technology used in your design;
    • list of activities your design would support;
    • list of system inputs (what is required to operate your system on an annual basis and what kind of maintenance is required?);
    • list of system outputs (for example, how many kilowatt-hours or cubic meters of water, what waste materials are generated and where do they go?);
    • list of the primary materials used in your design and major dimensions;
    • order-of-magnitude conceptual cost estimate;
    • a short summary of your strategy for on-site prototype development in the event that you are chosen for an honorarium grant, and;
    • In the same DOC or DOCX file, include a 500-word maximum environmental impact summary ).
  3. Between 3 and 12 high resolution 300 dpi JPG image files (without text) or simple diagrams (without text).  Must not exceed 50MB each in file size.
  4. OPTIONAL:
