Royal Society of Biology Photography Competition 2019

The Royal Society of Biology annual photography competition invites amateurs to submit photographs on a particular theme.

Capturing Movement  is the theme of this year’s competition. Life on Earth is constantly changing, and we invite you to photograph nature in motion.

More Details

You might wish to explore the locomotion and migration of animals or the growth and colonization of plants and fungi. Your photograph could depict the act of flying, hunting, playing and swimming, or the bones, muscles and other biological structures that help perform these actions. We also welcome entries that explore this theme at the cellular or molecular level, illustrating the dynamic world only revealed to us with a microscope.

There are two categories in the competition, each with a cash prize:

  • Photographer of the Year.
  • Young Photographer of the Year.

Program Period

  • The competition will close for entries on 26th July 2019.
  • Shortlisted entries will be announced in September 2019.
  • Winning entries will be announced in October 2019.

Eligibility Requirements (Criteria)

Young Photographer of the Year:

  • you must be under 18 years of age at the time of the closing date (26thJuly 2019).
  • you must not be involved in Royal Society of Biology organization, employees of the Society and their immediate family, sponsors of the competition, judges and their immediate family.
  • you must not use any entries that you previously sold, published or used in other competitions.
  • you must use digital images or scans of transparencies.
  • you must use images with high resolution JPEGs or PNG files no larger than 10 MB.
  • you must maintain the faithful representation of what was captured at the time of the shot being taken.

Photographer of the Year:

  • your must be at least 18 years old.
  • you must not be involved in Royal Society of Biology organization, employees of the Society and their immediate family, sponsors of the competition, judges and their immediate family.
  • you must not use any entries that you previously sold, published or used in other competitions.
  • you must use digital images or scans of transparencies.
  • you must use images with high resolution JPEGs or PNG files no larger than 10 MB.
  • you must maintain the faithful representation of what was captured at the time of the shot being taken.

Note: you must declare, in case you participated to this competition in previous years, that you had previously taken part and whether you had received an award or not.
