The International Astronomy and Astrophysics Competition
An international science competition that enable students from all countries to improve their skill and unleash their creativity in field of astronomy and astrophysics. IAAC gives you the unique opportunity to apply your skills to challenging problems. Participants can receive awards, cash prizes and global recognition.

Process and Rounds:

  • Qualification round: it is the first stage and consists of five astronomy problems that have been published online. The problems vary in topic and difficulty. All participants of the qualification round will receive participation certificates. You have to score at least 15 points (junior, under 18 years) or 20 points (youth, over 18 years) to qualify for the pre-final round.
  • Pre-final round: The problems will be more challenging, but even more interesting! The pre-final round consists of 10 different problems that vary in difficulty, points, and topic. Participants have to reach at least 30 points (junior) or 40 points (youth) to qualify for the final round.
  • Final round: The final round consists of a single 60-minutes exam with 40 multiple-choice questions. The questions require knowledge about astronomy and astrophysics as well as calculation skills and creativity. Every finalist has to appoint a supervisor (for example a school teacher) that will supervise the final exam.
    Note: The IAAC qualification round is free to enter for all students around the world. However, all qualified participants of the qualification round that want to register and continue with the pre-final round have to cover the pre-final registration costs of 8 USD to make this global competition possible

The results of the qualification round will be announced on 25 May,2020 while the pre-final round will start on 15 June,2020 and it will last for only one week. Finalists will be announced on 20 July,2020.

Eligibility Requirements (Criteria)

  • You have to be a high-school or university student. Thus, there are two age categories: Junior (under 18) and Youth (over 18).
  • You should be interested in astronomy, smart, and creative.

Opportunity Cost


  • All participants receive participation certificates.
  • The best students receive the 1. prize, 2. prize, and 3. prize with a cash award of 200 USD, 150 USD, and 100 USD.
  • the most outstanding participants from each global region (Africa, America, Europe, Greater Middle East, South Asia, South East Asia) receive the regional award to honor their excellence.
