UNITS YOU WILL STUDY:
ENGLISH COMMUNICATIONS
This unit is an enabling subject in the Diploma of Business. This unit enables students to develop their critical understanding and control of the English language for use in a wide range of formal and informal situations. It develops grammatical accuracy in both writing and speaking, ability to predict and understand written and spoken texts, and understanding of the conventions of academic writing in English including paraphrasing and referencing.
BUSINESS COMMUNICATIONS
This unit provides the essential foundation in the concepts and techniques of communicating within the field of business, finance, commerce and accounting. You will work together with other students to develop your interpersonal communication skills and understanding of the importance of building positive professional relationships. You will become skilled and flexible in interpreting and conveying information through a range of genre and multimodal forms depending on the audience, purpose, context and culture.
ACCOUNTING PRINCIPLES
This unit provides you with an understanding and application of the principles of accounting including the technical aspect of recording and reporting accounting information for simple business structures. You will gain an appreciation of the importance of financial information in business practice. Throughout the unit, you will gain skills and knowledge which can be applied to accounting information to prepare the three standard financial statements: income statement, balance sheet and statement of cash flows.
BUSINESS INFORMATION SYSTEMS
This unit introduces you to the use of business information as a means of enhancing decision making and overall efficiency. It deals with the nature and forms of organisational data and information and looks at the different types of information management systems. Data management and data modelling are examined along with its use in decision making within business. The unit also discusses the nature of security and the ethical issues associated with the use of large amounts of data.
MICROECONOMICS
Microeconomics deals with supply and demand
and the way they interact in various markets.
This unit looks at how profit can be maximised by
analysing pricing and output decision-making in
monopoly, oligopoly and monopolistic competition
and identifies sources of market failure.
ORGANISATIONAL BEHAVIOUR
This unit provides an introduction to a number of interconnected concepts and theories related to the interaction of individuals, groups and organisations within a workplace. The unit content allows you to understand how organizational behaviour has an impact on the efficiency of the organisation. Concepts introduced relate to motivations, group dynamics, team building,
organisational structure, culture, office politics, decision making and conflict. The unit concludes by reviewing leadership and the important role it plays within the organisation. You will apply your learning by developing a clear understanding of how businesses can benefit from understanding organisational behaviour.
QUANTITATIVE METHODS
This unit provides an introduction to many of the concepts and skills used in data analysis in a wide range of business and research situations. It includes the communication of results to assist rational decision-making in business. The unit includes topics on gathering, displaying and summarising data; discrete and continuous
random variables; normal and binomial distributions; sampling distributions; statistical inference and hypothesis testing; confidence intervals; t-tests and F-tests; regression and correlation; goodness of fit; chi square tests; and analysis of variance. Students will be introduced to the use of appropriate statistical packages.
PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT
This unit provides an introduction to contemporary thinking on organisations and what it means to be a manager. You will have the opportunity to develop your own managerial style and skills through exploring planning, leading, organising and controlling managerial functions associated with essential principles, theories and practices.
