about Bangor University
Overview
Founded in 1884 and dedicated to academic excellence for more than 130 years, Bangor University is among the oldest degree awarding institutions in the UK. With around 11,000 students from over 120 nationalities, international students find Bangor a truly welcoming community and a special place to study.
History
The University was originally based in an old coaching inn called the Penrhyn Arms. In 1903, the city of Bangor donated a 10-acre site overlooking the city at Penrallt for a new building, and substantial sums of money were raised by local people to help meet the cost.
The foundation stone was laid in 1907, and four years later in 1911 the main building was opened, together with some arts and social science buildings and part of the Library.
Today, we have over 10,000 students and around 2,000 members of staff. Bangor University is committed to providing teaching of the highest standard, conducting research of the highest quality, taking good care of its students and playing a full role in the wider community of Wales.
Education
BUIC programmes provide pathways to a distinguished selection of Bangor’s undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. BUIC delivers the first stages of the International Incorporated Bachelor’s and the International Incorporated Master’s programmes. Following successful completion of stage 1 at BUIC, students continue their studies directly at Bangor University.
Research
Our research is world-renowned. We were highly rated in the last Research Excellence Framework in 2014, in which three quarters of our research was described as either “world-leading” or “internationally excellent”. As well as boasting the highest proportion of Welsh/English bilingual staff in Wales, with notable expertise in the history and culture of Wales and the Welsh language, our researchers come from over 30 countries worldwide, and collaborate with colleagues from over 120 nations, with particularly extensive links to North America, Europe, Australia, China, South Africa, and Brazil.
