Saint Petersburg State University of Industrial Technologies and Design was established pursuant to the resolution of the Supreme Council of national economy of the USSR of 26 April 1930 as Leningrad Textile Institute which was named after S. M. Kirov by the Presidium of the Central Executive Committee of the Ussr on 31 August 1935.

The University of today is a multidisciplinary educational complex which includes 2 higher schools, 18 Institutes, 2 colleges and 8 University preparatory schools. At the moment the University trains specialists at different educational levels in 249 programmes in design, engineering, the humanities, economics and pedagogy.
Nowadays there are about 16,000 students at SPbSUlTD. High standards of professional education for the graduates are maintained by famous scientists and qualified university teachers. There are
more than 30 honorary figures of culture, higher education and members of creative unions – designers’ union and artists’ union. Information support of the education process
Currently, the main library of SPbSUlTD, library of the North-West Institute of Printing Arts and library of the Fashion Information centre are available for both students and staff of the University. Total library stock numbers over one million items. An online catalogue of the library resources has been built and maintained since 1994. Moreover, in 2010 Information environment “University Publishing Activity’ was created. This is an Internet resource which allows to manage scientific literature and learning materials publishing and which provides users not only with information about published materials but also full-texts of the published materials (for registered users). The University intranet affords access to the syllabi of the taught modules. Most university buildings and students’ dormitories have free Internet access.

ABOUT SAINT PETERSBURG
Saint Petersburg is the most northern city with a population exceeding one million. It is a coastal city and has rather mild climate with winter temperatures normally no lower than –10°C, and mid–summer temperatures varying between 20°C and 25°C. The city has a well–developed metro system, and the University campus is located very close to four metro stations of the same metro line which makes it very easy and convenient for students to move around the city. In addition to the metro, there are trams, trolleybuses and bus lines near the university and, of course, taxis, including the popular choices as Uber and Yandex Taxi. When in Saint Petersburg, you can pay with your credit/debit card almost everywhere, for example, in restaurants, cafes, shops, train stations, etc. However, private vendors might prefer cash. You can always use the currency exchange bank offices which are easily available in every part of the city including nearby the campus.
THE CITY STUDENT PRESS CENTRE
Was established on the University base and functions with the support of the union of Journalists of Saint Petersburg and Leningrad region and Committee on Science and Higher Education of Saint Petersburg. School of Publishing business and labour exchange operate as a part of the Media Centre, the former organizes master-classes, trainings, lectures and seminars with invited famous publishers, journalists and media figures and the latter helps young journalists and publishers. City Student Press Centre collaborates with the Committee for Youth Policy and Social Organizations Interaction, Committee for the Press and Mass Media Cooperation, City Students Labour and Training Exchange, Council of the Educational Institutions Editors and with a lot of other cultural, sports and educational organisations of Saint Petersburg and Leningrad region. SPESUITD publishes both scientific journals, namely, ‘Design. Materials, Technology, ‘News of Higher Education Institutions. Technology of the consumer goods industry, ‘News of Saint Petersburg State University of Technology and Design, and youth issues, such as ‘texSTYLE‘ newspaper and ‘STYLE-student‘ magazine. Concerts are arranged twice a month in the frame of ‘Students Philharmonic‘ project that is supported by the Committee for Youth Policy and Public Relations. Some more annual bright events in the University life are ‘Admiralty Needle international contest of young designers and Breath of Springʻall–Russia contest. The events attract contestants from all over Russia and 20 more countries.
University complex consists of eight university buildings, most of them being in the historic city centre. There are also four students’ dormitories and six countryside properties. Modern equipment of the departments, academic and research laboratories, lecture halls, experiment and test production workshops and industrial workshops of the research and production centre allow programs of both vocational and higher professional education.
Foreign students enrolled in SPSUITD are provided with a place to stay in the University campus which has more E l than 2.5 thousand places. The campus consists of six well–equipped dormitories which are well–furnished and fully equipped for students‘ comfortable stay. There are kitchens having refrigerators, stoves, tableware and other essentials, lounge, study and recreation rooms, separate showers and other rooms necessary for each and every student. Not to mention, the Internet connection is provided for study and leisure purposes.
INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITY
SPbSUITD is involved in active international cooperation and has more than 15 bilateral agreements with foreign educational institutions. Members of the teaching staff, undergraduate and postgraduate students of SPDSUITD participate in international conferences and internship programmes abroad, for instance, in Germany, Great Britain, France, Italy, Belgium, Finland, Poland, etc.
To afford students and members of the teaching staff an opportunity to rest and do sport, a sports and health camp was founded on the Karelian Isthmus. There are state-of-the-art gyms and fitness facilities in the University buildings. Students’ sports teams successfully participate in championships in 24 sports. Pedagogical and educational office, students’ council, students’ trade union committee, students’ creativity and leisure centre and ‘Tonika’ artistic centre function at the University for the students’ benefits. Active students are particularly interested in a tourist rally called ‘Healthy Day’ which is held twice per year in Lembolovo. Young people have an opportunity to compete in
exciting contests and enjoy team spirit.
