The Kim Wall Memorial Fund will provide a $5,000 grant to one female reporter whose work embodies the spirit of Kim’s reporting.

The grant will fund a female reporter covering subculture, broadly defined, and what Kim liked to call “the undercurrents of rebellion”. Kim wanted more women to be out in the world, brushing up against life, and the Kim Wall Memorial Fund honors this legacy.

Program Period

Grants to be disseminated 6–10 weeks following the application close.

Eligibility Requirements (Criteria)

  • Professional Journalism must be the applicant’s primary profession.
  • Applicants must have three or more years of professional journalism experience.
  • All answers and documents must be in English. Due to the high  volume of applications we cannot answer questions by phone.
  • Applicant must be able to show proof of interest from an editor or have a proven track record of publication in prominent media outlets.

Opportunity Cost


  • Grants will be $5,000 USD.

Grants will be awarded to cover:

  • Travel costs (flights, ground transportation, drivers).
  • Logistics.
  • Visa fees.
  • Insurance fess.
  • Payment for fixers/translators.

  • Biography (150-200 words and including “your full name, your position title, country, your areas of focus, awards, degrees”).
  • Your links on ( Twitter Handle, Instagram, Website).
  • Your idea in one sentence.
  • Reporting Project Proposal ( less than 850 words).
    (What is your idea?, What makes this project unique among work that is already available?, If you are selected for a grant what challenges do you anticipate? How will you address these challenges? Have you begun work on this project? If yes, what have you learned so far?).
  • Grant Budget (explaining how you will use the funds).
    – Please upload a detailed grant budget explaining how you will use the funds. Make sure to show a basi breakdown of costs associated with your proposal.
    -You may not include requests for equipment or tuition as part of your budget.
    – Budgets must be uploaded as a spreadsheet.
  • Publication Plan (Please explain in what publications and in what format you would ideally like to see your final product).
  • Security Plan (Please outline any potential security risks posed by your reporting and how you will approach them, please tell us about any security training you have received to prepare you to report this story).
  • CV.
  • Photographer is required (please upload three (3) additional photographic samples and a document with captions).
